The Dean Karen Tidmarsh ’71 Scholarship Fund, established in 2007 by a gift from Professor Emeritus of English Sandra Berwind MA ’61, PhD ‘68, provides undergraduate financial aid, with preference for students from Philadelphia area public high schools.

“I believed in her and she believed in me." That is how Professor Emeritus of English at Bryn Mawr, Sandra Berwind MA ’61, PhD ‘68, describes her relationship with Dean Karen Tidmarsh. Sandra received her MA from the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences at Bryn Mawr in 1961 while she was an instructor in the Freshman English program. There she met a student named Karen Tidmarsh. After 39 years of teaching, Sandra established The Dean Karen Tidmarsh ’71 Scholarship Fund to honor her friend and give Karen the recognition she deserved for her time at Bryn Mawr.

Sophomore Lindsey Jones of West Philadelphia notes about her experience at Bryn Mawr “how independent it makes you feel. Everything you do here is up to you.” Lindsey is majoring in English and one day hopes to become a children’s book author. She enjoys working on her manuscript either in her first floor single in Merion, or Carpenter Library.  Lindsey’s passion for writing began when she was a teenager. “I loved reading Harry Potter and the Hunger Games, yet, I always noticed, that as much as I loved these stories, there was never a featured character that looked like me. It’s important for kids to grow up knowing they belong in these spaces, too.” Lindsey is the recipient of The Dean Karen Tidmarsh '71 Scholarship Fund and hopes to take the first step forward in her career this summer as she applies for publishing internships.
